Toddler Program

The goal of the Toddler program is to provide the young child with a learning experience away from home and parents. This program serves as an introduction to the Montessori method for both the parent and the child.

The children will enjoy interaction with other children and adults, develop independence through self-help skills, and enjoy music and art expressions daily. Students in the toddler class begin to develop a work ethic preparing them for the Primary environment. Social interaction with other children, development of language skills, care of oneself and the environment, food preparation, music, and movement activities are integral to the Montessori toddler experience.

Our program fosters independence; self-confidence and a positive attitude toward learning which the child will carry with them through life. The role of the Toddler Teacher is to introduce the children to new learning materials and to insure that they understand them and handle them properly. Children at this age learn not only through individual lessons and independent practice, but also through observation of others.

A prerequisite to be enrolled in the Toddler Program is the child must be walking securely, weaned, and down to one nap per day.

Charles Towne Montessori School requires all Toddler Teachers be American Montessori Society (AMS) or Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) certified.

Primary Program

Primary Program

The Primary Program at Charles Towne Montessori School fosters individual growth and a delight in learning by emphasizing independence, cooperation, and a sense of community in carefully designed environments where children ‘learn by doing’.

Students in the Primary Program spend each morning with other three, four and five year olds. Students enjoy lessons in the major curriculum area such as practical life, sensorial, language, math and cultural subjects. They also participate in music, art, and movement on a daily basis.

The Primary teacher’s role is to recognize when a child is in a sensitive period of intellectual, emotional, or social growth. As the teacher recognizes one of these sensitive periods, lessons are prepared for that child that will focus on a specific skill. Written records of individual and group lessons are kept by the teacher throughout the year, and are discussed bi-annually at Parent/ Teacher conferences.

After the morning work cycle and outdoor playtime, half-day three and four year old students are picked up. The full-day three and four year olds have lunch and then rest in our nap room while the older students have a concentrated work time with the teacher. The afternoon work cycle is called Extended Day. When children show readiness physically, socially and academically, they are invited by a teacher to begin the Extended Day program.

Charles Towne Montessori School requires that all Primary teachers be certified by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI).

Elementary Program

Elementary Program

Elementary students build upon skills and concepts introduced in the Primary Program. As students enter the Elementary Program they begin to discover their own unique abilities, develop their talents constructively, and learn to evaluate their own efforts.

They are exposed to new materials and concepts in the cultural subjects (anthropology, astronomy, biology, chemistry, economics, geography, geology, government, history, philosophy, physics, political science, sociology, etc.). They also continue to develop skills in language, math, fine and performing arts, music, and Spanish language.

These concepts are not broken down into separate subjects, but are treated as a totally integrated curriculum. Children learn to manage their time, set goals, complete projects and, with the guidance of the teacher, become responsible for their own education and behavior. The student’s interest in being a member of a community is met through group lessons, projects and community service.

The Elementary teacher’s role is to go over lessons with the students and to help identify their individual strengths and weaknesses. As the student matures and progresses to more advanced work with the Montessori materials, they move toward abstraction in all subject areas.

Charles Towne Montessori School requires that all Elementary teachers be Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) certified.

Before After School Program

Before/After School Program

Charles Towne Montessori School provides a continuation of the Montessori philosophy that the children are accustomed to in the classroom in our Before and After School Programs.

In these programs children develop social skills such as the ability to work and interact with others, the ability to solve problems, and to seek help when needed. Children are separated into two age groups for the Before and After School Programs.

The Toddler area includes the toddler playground and garden area, and a large classroom where children can choose to color, read, sing songs, or play games.

The Primary and Elementary area consists of a large playground and the ‘after school room’ where children are free to choose the activities that interest them such as reading, creative writing, arts and crafts, or just resting.

Before and After School Program fees are a separate charge that is billed monthly. Spaces are limited.

Please contact the office for fees and availability.
